Finnikin of the Rock is a fantasy descent into the darkness of humanity. This book will make your feel bad hurt; however, it is satisfying to meld with characters as they overcome the evil inflicted upon them, and these characters have to overcome a massive amount of evil. Evanjalin and Finnikin, the flawed heroes, are certainly strong enough to do so. The story’s well-written characters draw you in and make you live their lives alongside them. The characters are hurtful, loving, sometimes selfish, and lash out in fear and pain; just like real people. Also, just like real people, they have to learn to forgive and love unconditionally.
The characters are excellent, and the Kingdom of Lumatere is fascinating. It has a rich and realistic history. It also has the tragic and frightening history that all countries face. Along with the great writing and character development, the novel has the classic travel adventure story feel, while still feeling like something new, dark, and enthralling.
